While searching for a missing Newcastle resident, another person’s remains were found. As previously reported, Afzal Khader vanished from his Fernwood residence on 4 March 2024, prompting an extensive search effort by law enforcement and local community groups. Despite nearly a month passing, Khader’s whereabouts remain unknown.
On Monday, 1 April 2024, the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) continued its mission to find Khader and led a search team from Boundary Road, Lennoxton.
Volunteers gathered to receive instructions on search locations, joining forces with the Newcastle SAPS Search and Rescue Unit.
Their initial search focused on the Weir in Lennoxton, with volunteers meticulously combing the area for any sign of Khader. Despite employing a dog from the K9 unit to aid in the search, no clues to Khader’s whereabouts were found.
Undeterred, volunteers redirected their efforts to Asparagus Avenue in Fernwood, near Khader’s home. However, during the search, the Search and Rescue team made a grim discovery: a badly decomposed body in the nearby Ncandu River.
The state of decomposition made immediate identification impossible, and the cause of death remains undetermined. Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam announced plans for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the details.
As authorities continue their efforts to identify the deceased, the Newcastle CPF urged residents to remain vigilant and assist in the search for Afzal Khader. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Warrant Officer Mkhanza at 034 314 6247 or Belinda Ellor from Newcastle CPF or Optimus Protection Services at 071 404 3575.
