To ensure the safety of all road users this Easter weekend, law enforcement authorities are stepping up efforts to crack down on motorists who flout traffic regulations. This follows the launch of the Easter Weekend road safety operations in Newcastle to reduce roadside fatalities and uphold traffic laws.
Gathering under the scorching sun on Wednesday, 27 March 2024, officials from Newcastle Municipality’s traffic department, along with police officers, immigration officers, paramedics, and RTI traffic officers, convened to kickstart preparations for the Easter weekend.
This saw a significant roadblock at the N11 and Allen Street intersection near Hilldrop, where vehicles underwent thorough checks for roadworthiness while drivers’ licences were scrutinised.
The initial operation is just one aspect of a broader strategy planned for the Easter Weekend. According to law enforcement, motorists can expect increased patrols by traffic and police officers within the town, as well as monitoring of national roads such as the N11.
As the focus on road safety heightens, the Automobile Association (AA) has offered valuable tips for travellers to ensure they enjoy a safe public holiday:
- Watch the speed limit – not the clock: Speeding accounts for nearly 30% of all fatal road crashes, highlighting the importance of adhering to speed limits.
- Buckle up all passengers: Seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of fatalities and should be worn correctly by all occupants.
- Check rear-view mirrors diligently: Regularly checking mirrors enhances awareness of surrounding traffic and potential hazards.
- Stop when tired: Fatigue impairs driving ability and poses risks comparable to drunk driving. Taking breaks every two hours or 200km is essential.
- Hands off the phone, eyes on the road: Distractions such as cellphone use divert attention from driving and increase accident risks.
- Share the road: Recognising and accommodating all road users, particularly pedestrians, promotes safety for everyone.
- Keep a safe following distance: Maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles allows for better reaction time and reduces the risk of collisions.
- Overtake safely: Only overtake when it’s legal and safe to do so, avoiding risky manoeuvres that endanger oneself and others.
“It is also critical that vehicles are in good mechanical condition before any journey – especially a long journey – is taken. If you have any doubts about the condition of a vehicle, it is critical to have it checked out before you travel,” urged the AA.
As Newcastillians prepare to enjoy the Easter weekend, with law enforcement gearing up to enforce traffic regulations, it’s essential to prioritise road safety.
