Bakkie crash leaves 10 injured en route to funeral

Taking place along the Madadeni Road on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, a bakkie carrying multiple passengers crashed, resulting in 10 people being injured.

Taking place a short distance away from the Newcastle Municipal dumpsite and airport, an official source at the scene explained that the incident unfolded while the driver and her passengers were en route to a funeral.

“While they were driving, the back wheel on the driver’s side burst, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle and it overturning,” explained the source.

The vehicle came to an abrupt stop on a vacant piece of land next to the road, with some of the vehicle’s occupants being flung out of the bakkie.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene within minutes, attending to the 10 injured people before transporting them to hospital. A paramedic on the scene explained that fortunately none of the injuries were serious.

“The patients sustained minor to moderate injuries,” highlighted a paramedic from the KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services.

With a strong medical presence on the scene, traffic officials were also on sight to assist with traffic flow as the site was cleared of the injured patients.
