The incident occurred as a motorist, accompanied by a colleague, journeyed from the direction of Volksrust to Newcastle.

Near the bridge at the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) offices, the motorist made a stop for a routine roadside break. Both men exited the vehicle to relieve themselves, a common practice among many South Africans.

However, their brief stop took a dark turn when a second vehicle pulled over, and three armed men emerged out of the car. In a terrifying ordeal, the assailants robbed the unsuspecting victims at gunpoint, seizing an undisclosed sum of cash before hastily fleeing the scene, leaving the victims shaken.

Lizzy Arumugam, spokesperson for Newcastle SAPS, affirmed, “Police investigations are underway. But motorists are being urged to avoid stopping on isolated roads to relieve themselves. It isn’t safe to stop alongside the road, and people should rather drive to a fuelling station. This is because stopping alongside the road holds the risk of being robbed or hijacked.”

The incident underscores the vulnerability of travellers along remote routes and the imperative need for heightened vigilance. Furthermore, Newcastle SAPS emphasised the importance of prioritising safety measures during travel.

  1. There has been a drastic increase in crime in Newcastle recently. Yet we do not see any visible policing in the Town. There are no foot patrolling like it was 15 20 years ago. What is happening with the police station in this town??
