Amidst the widespread financial challenges faced by countless people, the Silver Spoon Soup Kitchen in Newcastle continues to assist those grappling with putting food on their tables.

Nestled on Boundary Road, Silver Spoon dedicates itself to providing approximately 300 meals weekly to the hungry residents of Newcastle.
Founded by Ashila Hanmonth in July 2021, the soup kitchen aims to alleviate the hardships faced by Newcastle’s less fortunate community. Hanmonth explained that, before launching the initiative, a dedicated committee was formed, and essential steps were taken to kickstart the project. Local businesses, as well as corporate giants like Debonairs, Woolworths, and ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (AMSA) Newcastle Works, continue to actively participate in supporting this noble cause.
“Woolworths donates groceries every week to be handed out, while Debonairs supplies bread,” shared Hanmonth.
Joe Nowbath of AMSA’s Newcastle Works revealed that their involvement stemmed from Ashila’s plea for assistance. “We acquired the steel container, where Silver Spoon members provide the food to the community members,” Nowbath explained.
With Silver Spoon distributing cooked meals every Thursday from 11 am, Nowbath expressed AMSA’s commitment to furthering the soup kitchen’s growth.
“We have organised steel, which will be delivered next week, and we will then have a shelter built,” he stated, highlighting the shelter’s role in providing protection from weather conditions during the weekly distributions.
Furthermore, Nowbath outlined AMSA’s plans to assist Silver Spoon in aiding more people. “AMSA in Vanderbijlpark has a soup kitchen that provides thousands of meals a day. They provide soup, and the NGOs then collect it, before handing it out in their respective areas. We would like to do something similar and donate soup kettles, so Silver Spoon can provide meals more than once a week,” he disclosed.
Acknowledging the significant support from Woolworths, AMSA, and Debonairs, Ashila expressed gratitude, stating, “Businesses have supported us immensely, and we owe them a big thanks. We have been able to feed 26,658 people since starting Silver Spoon.”
