One person has been reported dead, following two trucks jackknifing along the R34, on the Newcastle to Utrecht road. According to reports on Tuesday afternoon, 19 September 2023 both incidents are believed to be linked to the inclement weather that erupted late on Tuesday afternoon.

The first truck crashed into an embankment at approximately 5:30 pm, prompting a response from emergency services.
An ER24 Emergency Medical Service official stated, “The incident took place on the R34, just 10km away from the N11. It is speculated that the truck had jackknifed due to the heavy winds during the storm on Tuesday.”
Tragically, the driver of the truck succumbed to his injuries before paramedics arrived. While emergency personnel were addressing the scene, a second truck crashed into an embankment, just a short distance away from the first crash, explained the ER24 official. “We were still on the scene when we received the call about the second incident, which took place just past the Wakkerstroom turnoff.”
The adverse weather conditions, including wet roads and strong winds, were believed to be contributing factors to both accidents. Fortunately, the driver of the second truck escaped serious injury, as confirmed by ER24 paramedics.
In the wake of these harrowing incidents, emergency services are urging motorists to exercise caution while driving. Road Angels Traffic Information advised, “People need to replace wiper blades, and check brake pads and tyre conditions, especially now that we are in the Spring season. The cold winter months are known to deteriorate these car parts.”
While these precautionary measures aim to enhance road safety, Road Angels Traffic Information emphasised the importance of adjusting driving speeds according to weather conditions. It is crucial to heed these warnings as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a notice on Tuesday, indicating the possibility of a stormy weekend and upcoming week (24th to 27th September 2023) across various parts of South Africa.
