After an extended spell of sunshine and heat, Newcastle residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first spring rains. However, there are speculations mounting as to whether the long awaited precipitation is finally on the horizon for the town.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) took to social media on Tuesday afternoon, 19 September 2023, to provide the day’s weather forecast.
According to SAWS’ weather service’s infographic, Newcastle is expected to experience thunderstorms during the course of the day. Additionally, Ladysmith is also forecasted to enjoy refreshing thundershowers.

With the potential of a thunderstorm looming over Newcastle, SAWS issued a notice concerning a possible stormy weekend and upcoming week (24 September to 27 September 2023) spanning parts of South Africa. This is due to a possible cutoff low system that could bring widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds to western, southern, and central South Africa from Sunday, 24 September 2023.
SAWS highlighted, ” It is, however, worth noting that cutoff lows are difficult to predict, and this is a very advanced outlook so it will most likely change. Updates and forecasts will follow closer to the weekend.”
