Could there be a change in store for vehicle number plates in KwaZulu-Natal?
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is considering the introduction of provincial motor vehicle license plates, following the example of other provinces.

During a media briefing at the Goble Road motor licensing office in Durban on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, Sipho Hlomuka, KZN MEC for transport, community safety, and liaison, explained the department’s plan to transition to a new provincial numbering system.
Provinces like Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and the Western Cape have already implemented a similar system.
Hlomuka highlighted that the current numbering system has reached its limit in certain areas, such as Empangeni, where numbers have been exhausted.
In line with this, the department aims to align with other provinces, where the number plates will only display “KZN.”
While the department is still in the consultation phase and has not disclosed a timeline for the process, Hlomuka assured that more details will be provided in the coming weeks.

We have so many other pressing issues to worry about in the province as well as the country at large. Why do these people prioritize things that really are not urgent or necessary. Dumb politicians
This will be a travesty, we in KZN are very proud of our numberplate displaying our area. There are other solutions to the running out of numbers problem, make the font size smaller and add a 6th number. Or clamp down on people who’ve moved out of the area to re-register to the new area, offer a financial inventive for it like free registration to the new area, just pay for the new plates.
Totally agree! Rather fix the ruddy potholes and leave the number plate system as is!
