You can expect to pay more for electricity from April 2023. This comes after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) officially approved Eskom’s 18.49% price increase for Municipal Bulk Purchases of Electricity.
It should be noted that municipalities will only experience the increase in tariffs in July, unlike the rest of Eskom customers who will see a massive increase in April.

As a result, NERSA explained, “Municipalities will realise a lower increase of 18,49% because, in the first three months (April to June) of Eskom’s financial year, they will not experience an increase, as their financial year commences on 1 July every year. The municipalities cannot increase their tariffs in the middle of their financial year, as it would not correspond with the revenue to be achieved from licensed municipal distributors.”
With the energy regulator recently confirming the price increases for municipalities, key industrial and urban customers will see an 18,65% increase plus an additional 7.37c/kWh to cater for the subsidy. This is an increase from 5.69c/kWh.
Furthermore, the increase for Eskom’s standard tariff customers will be effective from 1 April 2023 and for municipalities from 1 July 2023.
Concluding, the KZN South African Local Government Association (SALGA) chairperson, Thami Ntuli, pointed out that the price hike would hurt both struggling residents and the collection of revenue by municipalities that depend on electricity sales for revenue.
With a massive increase in store for residents, what are your thoughts on the above-mentioned? Share your views in the comment section below.

We are dying under the burden of price increases across all entities.
How does Eskom ascertain in which class you are? My family and I are no longer falling in the middle class category with a household income of R15000 per month. We do not use excessive electricity and never use our geyser and cook on a gas stove, yet are currently paying R1600 per month basically to switch lights on when night falls. Is it fair that we are paying for those who cannot pay, placing a great burden on our shoulders that we’re busy buckling under??
Why must we pay more do you think about the people who cannot afford it and struggle to pay for everything. Pensioners cannot afford the hike we get peanuts from goverment so now you want to take our food money
When I started using prepaid electricity I paid R500 for 564 units for a month, I am still paying the same amount today for 250 units and I see things heading to where one will find oneself paying same R500 for 1 unit this is terrible we will even think of going back to using wood for fire
ESKOM has failed this country.
This is really a shock for me and my family. The prices for food increases ⏲️ time and again and now this. How are we going to survive in this country???
Increase after increase the ANC has failed all of the citizens in SA misrebily
Why should consumers be penalized for the lack of planning & management of Eskom and we won’t even talk about cANCer and the money that has been stolen, especially in light of what has recently been brought to light. This government has failed us dismally!
ANC are a bunch of blood sucking leaches
NERSA should be disbanded as they along with Eskom have stalled the allocation of IPP’s to suit Eskom’s hidden agenda to control the grid entirely. The government, who have elected and control the Eskom hierarchy, should neverr have allowed these crazy way out of inflation rate increases to happen.
All. The medium to lower class who are actually paying for ekectricity are suffering most
NERSA should never have been allowed to consider tarif hikes nor the proposed amendment to loadshedding stages. If our president does not have the balls to say no further regarding Eskom and stepped in. Eskom is effectively robbing the nation blind.
Do it the Soweto Way…..a little extension lead and electrical socket in the nearest street lamp?
Why should consumers pay for a service not rendered!
