A group of bystanders gathered along Umfolozi Avenue, the road leading past Amcor Dam in Newcastle, on Wednesday morning, 22 February 2023, as officials recovered a police vehicle from the vehicle consuming waters.
With traffic officials closing off the road to motorists and police officers on site along with a large crane—onlookers found themselves watching the arduous challenge of safely removing the police bakkie from Amcor Dam, whose waters are still flowing strongly after the recent rains.
The recovery process began in the early hours of the morning, with the vehicle safely recovered shortly before 10 am.
According to officials, the bakkie washed into the dam on Friday night, 10 February 2023, during the flash flooding in Newcastle.
One of the officials on site explained that the police officers driving the vehicle were conducting patrols that night. This was to ensure no other motorists had attempted to cross the road or had washed into the water. Parked on the road, just before the water’s edge, the police vehicle was suddenly hit by a wave that swept it into the gushing water.
The recovery process had to be put on hold until the waters had subsided.
Thankfully, the officers managed to escape injury.
