Newcastle Municipality’s Deputy Mayor Musa Thwala spoke with Newcastillian News following a video showing him and his family living in a mansion.
The video, as seen by Newcastillian News, shows Cllr Thwala and his family enjoying themselves in a luxurious home situated in Signal Hill. The home holds an indoor pool, beautiful stylings, among other features. The source who submitted the video to Newcastillian News claimed that the house belonged to the popular councillor, with various residents now under the same impression.
As a key figure in the Newcastle Municipality’s leadership and not earning a substantial salary, definitely not enough to afford such a home, a few questions needed answering.

Explaining the video, Cllr Thwala played open cards, saying the following:
“I am living in the home with my family, but I do not own the house. My wife and I are currently subletting from the owner,” the Deputy Mayor began.
He further admitted that he and his wife were currently saving up for the necessary deposit of renting the home, which Cllr Thwala said was in the region of R150 000.
With the current sublet bill standing at around R21 000 a month, according to Cllr Thwala, The Deputy Mayor further said, “My wife and I share the payment for the rent, as I can’t pay it solely on my salary.”
Ensuring full transparency, Cllr Thwala showed the Newcastillian News the legal contract that had been written up, allowing him to rent the home.
However, the Deputy Mayor said, “I am interested in the house, as it is a beautiful home and in a wonderful suburb. My long-term plan is for my wife and I to save up enough money to eventually buy it.”
Reflecting on the video, Cllr Thwala said that his daughter made it and shared it on social media, simply because she loved the house and was proud of him and his wife.
“As a married man, as with everyone else, I wanted a beautiful home for my family and I to live in and enjoy. But now as Deputy Mayor, everything I do, I have to be so conscious of what people might think. I have always lived a normal life, never spending money on things that I could not afford, and I can’t afford this house cash, but we will save up,” he emphasised.
With his legal documents on hand and being as transparent as he could, Cllr Thwala said while he understood that his personal life would now come under scrutiny at times, he would always do his best for the community.
“If anyone has queries about the house, they are more than welcome to make an appointment at my office and come ask me about any concerns they might have,” he stressed.
