Police investigations are in full swing, following a foiled attempted assassination on Newcastle Deputy Mayor Cllr Musa Thwala’s life.

KZN Police Spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker gives us the rundown of the shooting in Section 5, Madadeni, near the Deputy Mayor’s home.

“It is alleged that at 18:30, his security guards noticed a vehicle parked across the street near a shopping centre.”

Newcastle Police spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam adds that the vehicle was a white Ford Ranger.

One of the Deputy Mayor’s  MI7 Security Company bodyguards approached the vehicle to investigate.

According to the Brigadier, it is then alleged that the vehicle’s occupants attacked the guard.

Arumugam further says that after the second guard heard gunshots, he jumped into action and joined forces with his partner.

During the struggle, Arumugam explains that a suspect sustained gunshot wounds. Simultaneously, one of the guards was shot in the head and the other in the hand.

Adding to this, Arumugam says, “According to information at the scene, a black VW Golf with unknown registration numbers came, and the suspect threw his firearm in it, and it drove away with the firearm.”

Thereafter, the two guards and the injured suspect were all transported to Madadeni Hospital. Brigadier Naicker notes that the motive for the attack is unknown, and Newcastle Police are investigating the incident.

Fortunately, the Deputy Mayor was not attacked, with the altercation taking place on the road outside his premises.
