Come December 2022, thousands of people will be descending on Northern KwaZulu-Natal’s Newcastle, Utrecht and Dannhauser for a massive four-day sporting event.
This follows the Amajuba District Municipality preparing to host the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) – KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (SADC) Games, more commonly known as the SALGA KZN SADC Games.
The monumental sporting event will see participants from the 61 KwaZulu-Natal municipalities flocking to the area to gain glory for their respective towns and Districts.
Furthermore, the SALGA – KZN SADC Games are likewise set to inject mass economic benefits into the three communities, with thousands of individuals participating in the event.
Getting things underway, on Wednesday, 31 August 2022, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) responsible for managing the 2022 edition of the SALGA KZNDSAC Games held its official planning meeting at the Amajuba District Municipality.
The meeting was attended by various stakeholders including sports federations, municipalities, KZN SALGA and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Part of the meeting was to ensure that the district was ready to host the provincial games set to take place from 8 December to 11 December 2022.
“Sports development and cooperation amongst all participating municipalities are some of the key objectives of these games. The team, in its planning, also ensures that these games contribute towards the development of the local economy,” the Amajuba District Municipality Communications Unit explained.
With 15 sporting codes lined up, sport enthusiasts can expect an extensive variety over the four days:
- Rugby
- Cricket
- Golf
- Netball
- Soccer
- Chess
- Volleyball
- Boxing
- Dancing
- Table Tennis
- Athletics
- Indigenous Games
Ensuring all towns benefit, the Amajuba District Municipality highlighted that the sporting events will be divided among the three towns.
“Each of our local Municipalities will be having certain codes played there. For example, Dannhauser will be hosting some activities at the Durnacol Sports Complex, eMadlangeni (Utrecht) will host chess and Indigenous Games, then Newcastle because of its capacity will have a bigger number of codes being played there,” explained the Communications Unit.
With thousands of people expected to flock to Newcastle, Dannhauser and Utrecht, what are your thoughts?

Great to hear something happening ,but why in Durnacol not in Dannhauser Town.Hope this will make some impact for the town of Dannhauser.
I wish if SALGA games can be used as the talent search in Amajuba. Maybe that can reduce the high drug and criminal rate we facing in our community. But really looking at the previous salga games…..i really dont find the the purpose except of intertainment thats costs a fortune.
