Potential political strife has hit Northern KwaZulu-Natal, with an ActionSA Councillor shot in Osizweni on Tuesday night, 26 July 2022.

Newcastle ActionSA’s Faizel Cassim explained that Cllr Mzwakhe Mbatha, a local PR Councillor for the political party, was shot at approximately 7 pm on Tuesday night. He was on his way to fetch his wife when the shooting took place.

“While he was in his car, a man approached his vehicle and knocked on the car’s window,” Cllr Cassim began.

While uncertain about who the individual was, Mbatha opened his car’s window to see what he wanted.

“The man then shot Cllr Mbatha in the face, before grabbing his phone and running away,” Cllr Cassim said, adding that the bullet went through one of his cheekbones, before exiting the back of his neck.

Following the shooting, Cllr Cassim explained that Cllr Mbatha was rushed to Madadeni Hospital for further treatment. “He was fortunate to have survived and I have gone to the hospital and spoken to him,” he said.

While stable, Cllr Cassim pointed out that Cllr Mbatha might be transferred to Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.

Following the shooting, Cllr Cassim emphasised that the police are called upon to investigate the matter and establish the exact motive for the unnecessary shooting. “At the moment, we don’t know if it was politically motivated or a robbery.”

The spokesperson for the Osizweni SAPS, Captain Sipho Nkosi explained that while the suspect was still at large, police investigations are underway.

“Currently, the exact motive for the shooting is unclear. However, police suspect it might be politically motivated,” he pointed out.

As police investigations now look into the crime, what are your thoughts on the above-mentioned?
