Post Office accidentally puts Pioneer Park Post Boxes property up for auction

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Newcastle residents using the Post Boxes on John Parks Road, Pioneer Park, may have noticed a troubling sign on the property’s fence.

The South African Post Office, according to the signage, had put the property up for auction.

However, after contacting the South African Post Office, seeking clarity on how this will impact customers, new information came to light.

Johan Kruger of the South African Post Office’s Communications Division explained that Newcastillians who use post boxes are not at risk of losing them. Additionally, he explained that the signage was erected due to an administrative blunder.

“The land on which the Newcastle post boxes is situated was erroneously included in the unused properties that will go up for auction. The mistake has since been rectified.” Having said that, he affirmed that the Post Office has no intention of disposing of the post boxes.

Yet when looking back, unfortunately, the Post Office has had its fair share of challenges over the past few months.

In October 2021, the Newcastillian – Online News reported on the temporary closure of the Hutten Heights Post Boxes at the Gemsbok Street shopping complex. Security gates blocking access to the premises, seeing residents unable to collect their mail.

Nobuhle Njapha of the South African Post Office’s Communication Division explained at the time that the post boxes had been closed due to financial constraints. Due to non-payment by the Post Office, the branch was without electricity, and mail collection was suspended.

Additionally, the Newcastillian – Online News reported on 17 February 2021 that the Newcastle Post Office on Scott Street was unable to assist residents. This was due to the branch’s failure to pay its utility bill.
