The Newcastle Municipality officially started the first Mayoral Integrated Development Planning (IDP)/Budget consultation roadshow on Wednesday, 20 April 2022. The Newcastle Show Hall played host to the local municipality’s first of many stops over the next few weeks.
Under the theme “Closer to the people, Closer to the community”, Newcastle Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube set the tone by promising all Ward Committee members present that these roadshows are a beginning of a brand-new era for Newcastillians.

According to the Newcastle Municipality, the roadshows will outline the municipality’s plans for the next financial year and how the local government entity aims to accelerate service delivery in all areas across Newcastle.
As the community plays a major part in the roadshows, the Newcastle Municipality’s leadership will be travelling to various parts of Newcastle to interact with residents about what is in store for the town.
It must be noted that an IDP is an approach to planning that involves the entire municipality and its residents in finding the best solutions to achieve decent long-term development.
Furthermore, an Integrated Development Plan is a super plan for an area that gives an overall framework for development.
It aims to coordinate the work of local and other spheres of government in a clear plan to enhance the quality of life for all people living in a respective area.
An IDP must consider the existing conditions, issues and resources available for development.
It is also necessary that the plan looks at economic and social development for the area as a whole. An IDP must set a framework for how land should be used, what infrastructure and services are needed and how the environment must be protected.

All municipalities must produce an IDP, and are responsible for the coordination of the IDP. Additionally, they must draw in other stakeholders in the area who can impact on and/or benefit from development in the area.
As the IDP and Budget plays an essential role in Newcastillians lives, the Newcastle Municipality has provided a schedule on when and where residents can expect to attend the event and participate.
