Chatting with Newcastle Municipality‘s new mayor, Cllr David Xolani Dube of the Inkatha Freedom Party—we learn more about him and a bit more about what you can expect from this committed leader.
Born and raised in the city and educated in Blaauwbosch, he is a man deeply rooted in the area. But, before becoming Mayor, Cllr Dube served as the IFP’s chief whip for five years. He gained a wealth of political expertise throughout this time, allowing him to work behind the scenes at times while always focusing on the lives of the people he serves.
But when looking back on why he entered the political arena, he says, “I became involved in politics because its influence is virtually everywhere, and I wanted to be part of that influence, being able to help those who cannot help themselves, while focusing on the betterment of the town at large.”
Furthermore, many people are unaware that Mayor Dube is a loving father to his seven sons and a devoted husband to his wife, Londiwe. He is also the first IFP mayor in approximately 12 to 13 years.
Moreover, Cllr Dube is looking forward to ushering in a new era of leadership in Newcastle as a family-oriented individual and a community-driven politician.
“Newcastle is in my heart and a part of who I am. I want to be able to better our town for generations to come. Newcastle is an economic hub and has established businesses and tertiary institutes. Yet, so many people are leaving and I want to change this.”
He intends to accomplish this by putting in place mechanisms to attract investment and ensure that the community thrives.
Additionally, Cllr Dube is committed to addressing ageing infrastructure, affecting every Newcastillian daily.
Combating drug misuse and unemployment are two more measures he aims to investigate. “Drug abuse contributes to crime. And when looking at unemployment, Newcastle is not creating employment but rather seeing an increase in job loss. Both of these issues must be addressed.”
Adding to the list, the mayor affirms that food security is on his to-do list. This, he explains, is the result of certain persons being assigned farmland. Because these individuals lack the essential expertise and experience, the mayor plans to form a committee to assist them, which will aid Newcastle’s food security.
Cllr Dube and his team are currently working on a range of measures to improve Newcastle, and the mayor has some parting words for the city’s residents.
“As the IFP, we are known for service delivery and leading by integrity. We will do our best to improve Newcastle and uplift our community.”
