Zulu royal family’s Umembeso takes place in Newcastle

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

A sense of jubilation prevailed this past weekend, with King Misuzulu kwaZwelithinil and the rest of the Zulu royal family making their way to Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

The aim of the visit was that of the traditional Umembeso Ceremony, which took place on Saturday, 2 April 2022, in Blaauwbosch. Ntokozo Mayisela, the future Queen’s family, officially presented her to the AmaZulu royal family.

According to custom, the Umembeso ceremony occurs before a traditional wedding. “It is part of the lobola negotiations where the groom presents gifts to the bride’s parents and family”.

It must also be noted that the AmaZulu King is expected to be a married man before he ascends to the throne.

In 2021, the Zulu royal family elders paid the necessary lobola to the future Queen’s family, and preparations for the coronation are already underway.
