A Ladysmith man is dead due to what appears to be mob justice in connection with his role in a recent abduction case.
Colonel Thembeka Mbele, police spokesperson, elaborates on the situation. She explains that on 14 November 2021, 34-year-old Thokozile Makhowane left home with her boyfriend and never returned.
Following a case being opened, Colonel Mbele says detectives apprehended the women’s 44-year-old boyfriend. However, due to a lack of evidence, the court released him.
The SAPS refused to give up on the missing woman, with Colonel Mbele stating, “The investigating officer continued with his investigation while keeping a close eye on the man.”
However, the court decision did not go down well with local residents. Feeling justice had not been served, a group of people confronted the man at his home at 9 pm on Monday, 6 December 2021, demanding answers. “He was severely assaulted until he showed them where he had buried Thokozile’s body,” says Colonel Mbele.
Later on, her semi decomposed body was found in a shallow grave at Bramhoea in the Besters area, near Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal. Colonel Mbele states that the police intervened and removed the beaten man from the enraged community. However, he sustained multiple wounds and died while en route to the hospital.
Besters detectives are now investigating an inquest and murder.
“The public is advised to not to take the law into their own hands, but always call the police for assistance. Those found to be involved in the killing of the man will face the law. They will be arrested and charged accordingly,” Colonel Mbele concludes.
