The saga around Glencoe farmer Garth Simpson continues with the 68-year-old murder accused appearing in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday morning, 1 March 2022.

This follows AfriForum taking action against the Glencoe Magistrates Court to deny Simpson bail. Initially, it was stated that the decision to deny Simpson was for his own safety, among other alleged reasons.

Simpson is facing charges of murdering 17-year-old Qiniso Dlamini on 28 September 2021, during an altercation on the farmer’s property. He is also facing a further charge of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Appearing in court multiple times since the incident, AfriForum decided to appeal the court’s decision in denying Simpson bail, taking the matter to the High Court.

On Tuesday morning, the Pietermaritzburg High Court officially overturned the previous decision in denying the farmer bail. According to AfriForum, Simpson was granted bail of R10 000 and is now expected to be released accordingly.

With Simpson now being granted bail, legal proceedings are expected to continue. The Glencoe farmer appeared last in court on 15 February 2022, with the matter being postponed until 14 March 2022.
