After nine months of pregnancy, one quickly learns there is so much that comes with having a baby. Think about it. There are the gynaecology visits, weird and random cravings, fluctuating emotions and the resounding amounts of fear, let alone how my wife was feeling, and then the day finally arrives.
Fear of the unknown becomes the driving emotion as you book into the maternity ward and settle in. But before you can wipe the nervous tears from your eyes, you are sitting in a dressing room, waiting on tenterhooks to be called into a theatre, where your wife is in the process of a Caesarean (C-Section).
Finally, you are ushered into the room. Your emotions swallow energy as this timeous moment unfolds. Within minutes, the world stops spinning. Time as you know it simply collapses, and stars hold their flicker, as you gaze upon your child for the very first time.
But then, as this beautiful moment comes to life, you are told your child has liquid on her lungs and requires attention, immediate attention.
Your world tightens, and the butterflies rage deep within your soul. You are filled with raw emotion.
Adding to the gripping anxiety, you are a cash-paying client and have not budgeted for the additional costs. So, what do you do now? You know you must ensure your daughter receives the best medical care, irrespective of the sudden challenge now thrown in front of you.
Suddenly, amidst this emotional moment, something totally unexpected happens.
Firstly, the nursing staff in the Maternity and NICU Ward welcomes and cares for you in the most graceful and love-filled fashion. These are a group of the most highly dedicated, committed, and knowledgeable people that a person could ever hope for in a situation like this.
These angels take you on a journey, from explaining the process, providing comfort and guidance, to constantly paying attention to your every worry and fear.
These lights in the dark were further illuminated by a passionate management and admin staff, who picked up this costly challenge thrust upon us, doing everything in their power to help. They did all they could to relieve the crushing pressure, constantly looking at how and where they could support and care for us in our time of need.
To say I have never experienced such love from a business, let alone a private hospital, would be an understatement.
I came to learn that Mediclinic Newcastle is not just a building with wards and corridors like one would expect to find at a hospital.
Instead, it is a home filled with an extended family who bands together in the most remarkable ways, helping people they do not know, going way beyond the call of duty.
From management to the cleaners, Mediclinic Newcastle holds what many large hospitals do not, namely, love. This team ensured that my family and I walked out whole.
Due to their compassionate and caring mentality, we left feeling humbled and with a bit more faith in humanity.
Therefore, it is only fitting that we take the time to showcase a compilation of Newcastillians who deserve the recognition. These are people who not only take pride in their careers but know the importance of reaching out to those who simply need a human touch. Therefore, join us in celebrating the following amazing people:
