Street lights on during the day, Deputy Major explains

Streetlights

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

South Africa has been plagued by loadshedding for just under one and half decades. Leaving our lives, economy and future looking a bit dark if the problem persists.

In line with this, Eskom‘s latest announcement states that we are nowhere near out of the woods as yet with loadshedding and that electricity must be used sparingly.

However, as Newcastillians have noted, several streetlights in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, are burning bright throughout the day. The question now is: what is the reasoning behind it, and what will the Newcastle Municipality do about it?

While Newcastle Deputy Mayor Shedrack Musa Thwala cannot explain why the lights are turned on, he assures that the situation will be investigated as quickly as possible. Furthermore, he states that he, Newcastle Mayor David Dube, and Newcastle Speaker Cllr Zulu will soon launch an initiative to address lighting concerns.

“We plan to meet with members of the community to hear their concerns and have a better understanding of the community’s needs.” Moreover, he says that specialised teams are dedicated to dealing with difficulties like those with streetlights.

“At this time, all we ask is for patience from the community as we finalise the administration and begin to address the existing concerns.”

With the Newcastle Municipality’s new management taking a proactive stance on existing issues, what are your opinions on the subject?
