Eskom will begin Stage 2 loadshedding at 11 am on Wednesday, 2 February 2022, and will continue until 5 am on Monday, 7 February 2022.
On Tuesday evening, 1 February 2022, the power utility stated that the power system was severely constrained. This is due to numerous generation unit breakdowns at various power plants over the weekend.
“While some of these units have since returned to service, four other generating units that failed are still offline. A unit each at Matimba and Hendrina suffered a boiler tube leak, while a unit each at Majuba and Kendal tripped.”
Delays in returning units at Kusile, Tutuka, Duvha and Grootvlei also contributed to supply constraints on Tuesday.
“Since the weekend, Eskom has utilised significant amounts of emergency generating reserves, which have now been depleted and need to be replenished. Eskom will use this period of loadshedding to replenish the emergency generating reserves,” the power utility explained.
A unit at each of the Kusile and Kendal power plants has tripped. Returning unit delays at Kusile, Tutuka, Duvha, Lethabo, and Grootvlei have also contributed to the current supply constraints.
