Eskom will begin implementing Stage 2 loadshedding at 2 pm today, 17 November 2021.

According to the power utility, this is due to ongoing insufficient generation capacity and the loss of a unit each at Medupi, Duvha, and Kendal power stations this morning.

Loadshedding in Stage 2 will continue until 5 am on Saturday, 20 November 2021.

“This is to preserve the remaining emergency reserves at the OCGT and pump storage power stations in order to prevent higher stages of loadshedding.”

Of the five units that failed on Tuesday, 16 November 2021, Eskom explains that a unit at Majuba, Kriel and Matimba power stations have returned to service. Meanwhile, the remaining two units are being repaired for boiler tube leaks.

Total breakdowns currently stand at 15 485MW, with 4 100MW of capacity scheduled for maintenance.

“We remind customers that loadshedding is implemented as a last resort to maintain the stability of the power system regardless of the stage of loadshedding,” the power utility claims.
