Due to the Personal Information Protection Act (POPIA), matric results will no longer be published on Digital Media, Newspapers, or social media platforms.

In a statement, Elijah Mahlanga, spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education (DBE), explains, “The DBE recognises that section 14 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, provides that everyone has the right to privacy.”

Additionally, he emphasises that this right to privacy includes protection against the unauthorised collection, retention, dissemination, and use of personal information.

To comply with the provisions of the POPIA, the usual practice of publishing national certificate (NSC) results on public platforms (media platforms) will be discontinued in 2021. “As was also the practice in previous years, all learners will be required to obtain their statement of results from the schools they attended.”

Mahlanga emphasises that this will protect each learner’s personal information regarding the outcome of their national senior certificates.
