On Monday night, 13 December 2021, the Amajuba ISI received information concerning criminals targeting PEP stores on Allen Street.
Imran Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighters Task Team explains that an operational team was formed as soon as the information was received. This group included the following individuals:
- Warrant Officer Kleynsmith, Sergeant Mthembu, and Constable Mbambo of the Newcastle K9 Unit.
- Warrant Officer Sithole and his team from Newcastle Crime Prevention.
- The Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Force
- Anti-Hijacking Unit
- Scott Dobbie, Ebrahim Usman, Zack, and M.Doc are among the members.
- Magenta Security
- Ressec Security
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered that the suspects were already on the roof of the said business, armed with tools to help them gain access.
Ghafoor emphasises that the operational team encircled the entire area, with Warrant Officer Kleynsmith and himself climbing the roof and approaching the suspects.
However, the men attempted to flee the scene, resulting in a hot pursuit. During their escape attempt, two suspects gained entry to a small flat near a Mosque in the area.
Once inside the flat, the panicked criminals decided to hold a woman hostage. Fortunately, the fast-acting team calmed the situation down, resulting in the woman being freed and the suspects arrested.
With four men in custody, Ghafoor explains that they will be charged with possessing housebreaking equipment, breaking into a business, trespassing, and holding someone hostage.
Looking at the entire situation and seeing justice prevail, Ghafoor says, “I would like to thank the Muslim community who assisted us, and thanks to everyone else who assisted with another job well done.”
