Newcastillians were shocked by the beheading of a 6-year-old girl, whose needless death can only be described as a barbaric act of cruelty.

On 25 November 2021, at KwaSobabili Village in Ntabamhlope, Estcourt, police discovered the child’s decapitated body in a rondavel. According to reports, the perpetrator had an altercation with the child’s uncle earlier that day before returning to the family’s home to carry out the murder. He was then seen fleeing the rondavel, clutching a bloodied plastic bag.

While the country has expressed its outrage at the crime, what developments have been achieved in the case? Nonhlahla Khoza, the KZN Social Development MEC, described the crime as a barbaric act committed by a heartless criminal.

According to Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, the 24-year-old man charged with murder made his second appearance in the Estcourt Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 7 December 2021. “The matter was postponed to 14 December 2021, at the request of the accused’s legal representative, for arrangements for him to undergo mental assessment.”

Do you feel this man has a mental health condition, and if so, why? Or do you think he is just a heartless killer?
