As of 8 November 2021, Brigadier Leon Matthysen will now oversee Newcastle Police Station as Station Commander. The highly experienced, no-nonsense Brigadier affirms that Newcastle can expect a new ear of policing with his appointment.
Brigadier Matthysen, who joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) 36 years ago, is eager to make his mark in our community. “I am privileged and honoured to be here so that I can serve the community and I intend to give 110% to the Newcastle community.”
Moreover, the Brigadier, who matriculated in Pietermaritzburg, has had a distinguished career with the SAPS. Having led stations in Isipingo, Pinetown, and Verulam, to name a few. Additionally, he has also served as a Colonel in the SAPS for the past 22 years.
“I hope to bring in some ideas from Durban. I also want to see how myself and the local police officers can learn from each other, as the strategies used in Durban will be somewhat different from those in Newcastle.”

Furthermore, Brigadier Matthysen intends to work closely with the community and local security companies, looking at various plans and strategies to implement. This is due to his strong belief in community policing and regularly paying close attention to crimes that affect people.
After reviewing the profile of Newcastle Police Station, the Brigadier admits that he has concerns that need to be addressed. Among these concerns are:
- Liquor stores that are not in compliance with the law.
- Consuming alcohol in public.
- Unlawful firearms.
- Assaults.
- Drinking and driving.
“I am also not happy with the number of break-ins in both residential and commercial areas, which is too high.”

He declares that due to all of this, police activity will increase. From general visibility to stop and search operations—police will ensure the rule of law is followed punctually.
Brigadier Matthysen also emphasises that all police corruption allegations will be investigated thoroughly. Assuring that the appropriate steps and channels will be taken to ensure that justice is served, if the information is provided.
Let us extend a warm welcome to Brigadier Matthysen as he settles into the Newcastle community.
