A large storm brews in KwaZulu-Natal, prompting Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to issue a weather warning to locals.
Sipho Hlomuka, MEC for Cogta in KZN, urges residents to take the appropriate precautions to keep safe during the heavy thunderstorms expected to hit the province this afternoon and evening, 30 November 2021.
The South African Weather Service issued a warning for vast portions of the province due to the high likelihood of strong winds, hail, violent lightning, and heavy downpours.
Storms may strike communities in the following Districts, according to the warning:
- uMgungundlovu
- Harry Gwala
- uMzinyathi
- uThukela
- Zululand
- Amajuba
- Ilembe
- Cetshwayo (King Cetshwayo).
In a statement, Cogta warns that the inclement weather may lead to:
- Lightning strikes. These could result in human and livestock deaths and injuries.
- Localised damage to vehicles due to hail
- Heavy rains, resulting in localised flooding of roads and low-lying bridges.
Throughout the province, Disaster Management teams have been placed on high alert. As a result, they are monitoring locations prone to weather-related catastrophes.
Residents requiring assistance may call their city councilperson or the District Disaster Management Centre.
