With a cold front currently moving through parts of the country, Eskom has issued a notice warning of potential loadshedding.
The state-owned enterprise claims, “Due to the severely cold weather in parts of the country, coupled with the loss of some generation capacity, Eskom would like to warn the community that it may be forced to implement loadshedding at short notice should there be any further generation losses.” Further claiming, the system is currently severely constrained, and it is anticipated that towards the peak of the peak, the system will come under additional pressure due to the high demand.
“Breakdowns currently total 12 984MW while planned maintenance is 2 942MW of capacity. Any further significant loss of capacity would force Eskom to implement loadshedding in order to protect the integrity of the system. Therefore, Eskom is currently pleading with the public to reduce their electricity usage to help ease the pressure on the power system between 4 pm and 9 pm.
