A turbulent atmosphere prevailed in Umkhanyakude District Municipality.
This comes after the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC Sipho Hlomuka dispatched senior officials to the municipality, barricaded for three days by the residents.
According to CoGTA, reports received by the department indicate community members removed staff members from the municipal head offices in Mkhuze. The staff members were then barred from accessing the building.
It is reported that the communities have grievances concerning service delivery.
MEC Hlomuka is now calling for calm and urging communities not to take the law into their own hands. Doing this, he claims, sets a dangerous precedent.
CoGTA claims the senior officials deployed by MEC Hlomuka will engage with the community and the municipality. Their focus will be on finding practical solutions to some of the challenges.
The municipality, under section 139(1)b intervention, has been facing multiple challenges. This includes infighting among its councillors, governance failures, and severe financial pressures.
MEC Hlomuka has also written to the Councillors of the municipality requesting a meeting with the full council and management to engage on the grievances raised by communities.
As the KZN MEC for Cogta calls for calm, what are your thoughts on the matter?
