Eskom recently announced scheduled loadshedding can be expected from this evening, 25 October 2021.

DA Cllr Bertie Meiring says he received word that geysers in the area will no longer be turned off. Instead, Eskom has asked the municipality to implement Stage 2 loadshedding as part of the rotational programme.

In light of this, Cllr Meiring asks the community to disregard other statements circulating on social media until further notice.

“Please, refer to your Stage 2 loadshedding schedules,” he stresses.

On Saturday, 23 October 2021, Eskom said that loadshedding would be introduced from 9 pm until 5 am on Monday, October 25, 2021. This due to a shortfall of generation capacity.

During the last week, the power utility admits to many breakdowns and trips, including those at the Tutuka, Kriel, Hendrina, Kusile, Arnot, and Kendal power stations.

Some of these units returned to service by 23 October 2021.

Furthermore, Eskom explained this had required them to utilise extensive emergency generation reserves to supplement capacity during the week. “These now need to be replenished in order to increase available capacity for the week ahead.”

While promising that loadshedding will be lifted by Monday 5 am, 25 October, the power utility issued a follow-up statement on Sunday, 24 October 2021.

Whereby Eskom stated that, as a result of the loss of Koeberg Unit 1 on Sunday morning, they expect to use emergency reserves extensively during the following three days. This is done to avoid load shedding.

“In order to achieve this, Stage 2 loadshedding will be required during Monday and Tuesday nights in order to replenish the emergency reserves for the following day.”

On Sunday morning, Koeberg Unit 1 tripped due to a malfunction on a feedwater pump on the secondary plant.

“There are no nuclear safety concerns on the reactor side of the plant, which is ready to be restarted once the feedwater pump fault has been resolved. The investigation into the feedwater pump fault is in progress and once concluded, Eskom will be able to confirm the return to service date of the unit, which is expected to be during next week.”

According to the power utility, a unit at the Tutuka power station, Hendrina power stations and two units at the Kusile power station have been returned to service over the weekend.

“Unfortunately, we have taken off a unit each at Hendrina and Kriel power stations, in addition to the Koeberg unit,” the power entity concluded.

Newcastillians will be notified if there are any additional developments from Eskom.
