Keeping you informed with developments concerning corrupt officials being brought to book. Hawks from the Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation team arrested a 42-year-old man for corruption on Friday, 3 September 2021. This the result of a well-planned trap laid out for the greedy thief.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo explained that it is alleged that the suspect is the brother-in-law of one of the men who were charged for tampering with essential infrastructure and theft of crude oil in July 2021.

This incident involved three men who attempted to steal crude oil from the Transnet National Pipeline in the Karbochem area, Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. However, they were arrested at a local fueling station.

Adding to the corrupt man’s woes, according to Captain Mhlongo, the man allegedly offered cash to the investigating officer. “An undercover operation was planned and executed. He was caught immediately after paying R50 000 cash to the police detective.”

The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged for corruption. He is now expected to appear in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court.
