Truck flips and burns out on Memel Road heading for Newcastle

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Sadly, this morning two people lost their lives on the R34 (Memel Road), heading towards Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, after allegedly losing control of the truck they were travelling in.

During the early hours of Wednesday morning, 21 July 2021, the vehicle overturned while heading towards Newcastle from Memel’s direction on the said road. According to a police source, it is speculated that the driver lost control of the heavy-duty vehicle, seeing it overturn. “The truck caught alight shortly afterward,” claims the source.

Newcastle firefighters, traffic officers and police, alongside other emergency personnel, rushed to the scene, extinguishing the flames, while ensuring no further collisions occurred while the scene was being tended to. As the source states, the accident requires investigation as the vehicle was not going around a corner when it lost control, eventually flipping and ending in tragedy.

Therefore, with a full police investigation now to be conducted, motorists are encouraged to travel with caution, service their vehicles at regular intervals and obey speed limits. (The potholes alone should be enough motivation to slow down, let alone).

The Newcastillian – Online News extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
