Emergency Medical Services found themselves racing against time on Monday, 5 July 2021, responding to three collisions on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads—sadly seeing six people passing away and several more left injured.
The first incident occurred on the Khilimoni Road, near Underberg, when a minibus and a truck collided. Providing further insight into the matter, KZN Emergency Medical Services’ spokesperson Robert McKenzie says, “Sadly, three people have sustained fatal injuries in this crash.” He further stated that paramedics treated at least six patients on the scene before transporting them to the local hospital for continued medical care.
Furthermore, McKenzie pointed out the exact cause of the crash was unclear and was being investigated by the police.
In addition to the above, three people were killed in a horrific accident on the N3 with three others injured, two critically—following a Toyota Hilux and a heavy-duty vehicle crashing.
Emer-G-Med paramedics arrived on the national highway scene, near the Eetam off-ramp, to find the Toyota Hilux had collided in a T-bone fashion with the heavy-duty vehicle, leaving five occupants of the Toyota firmly entrapped in the wreckage.
Three occupants were found to have sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased on arrival, while two others were critical. Emergency Care Practitioners stabilised them, using numerous advanced life support intervention techniques, while rescue technicians freed them from the wreckage, using the Jaws-of-life. Once free, they were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Furthermore, the passenger and driver of the heavy-duty vehicle only sustained moderate injuries and were stabilised before being taken to a local hospital for further care. The cause of the accident is unknown and is currently being investigated.
Coming in during the later part of Monday afternoon, reports state that on Marine Drive in Shelly Beach, Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service responded to a head-on collision, where a minibus taxi and another vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision. Paramedics found that 13 patients sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe—who were then treated before being transported to hospital for further treatment.
