In celebration of Youth Month, eThekwini Municipality officially opened the GO!Durban Cycle Academy Bike Park in KwaMashu E-Section on Saturday, 19 June 2021.

The launch highlighted the collaborative efforts of stakeholders who provided support in establishing the new bike park. This includes the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, the Federal Republic of Germany and the City’s local implementation partner, Green Corridors.

With the bike park featuring a world-class velo solutions asphalt pump track, eThekwini Chief Whip Councillor Sibongiseni Mkhize described the bike park as a “beacon of hope in communities.” He enthused, “The park brings young people together using cycling as a common focus. Our hope for the new KwaMashu bike park is that it will promote a cycling culture which is in line with the City’s active mobility plan.”

The GO!Durban Cycle Academy Programme was founded in 2016 and has grown from one site in eNanda, to include sites in KwaDabeka, Chesterville and the new park in KwaMashu. The programme trains around 400 youth every week by providing free cycling training, academic support, and life skills development. The Municipality has also introduced a bicycle-share pilot programme to promote active mobility in the City.

The pilot programme comprises of three key elements, namely training, equipment and ongoing maintenance. Fifty community members have been identified following a rigorous selection process and will receive a bicycle, helmet, and reflective safety vest. The bikes are all fitted with tracking units that will enable GO!Durban to collect data, allowing the City to plan for better active mobility in the future.
