Paramedics treat 30 patients following a major collision

Emergency personnel arrived at a gruesome scene on Monday, 10 May 2021, shortly before 4 pm—following a collision on the N3 Highway, Hidcote, involving four vehicles.

According to KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie, the vehicles involved in the crash included a light motor vehicle, a bus, and two trucks, of which one was a tanker carrying a hazardous substance that erupted in flames. Shortly after the incident, paramedics on the scene began treating 30 patients, several of whom were critically injured.

With EMS staff treating the injured, the road between Escourt and Mooi River was closed, with the tanker and bus engulfed in flames, creating severe heat, thereby interfering with the traffic flow.

Firefighters managed to contain most of the blaze; however, they made a grisly discovery when they got closer to the scene. They found seven people in the smouldering wreckage of the vehicle caught between the bus and tanker.

Emergency personnel worked well into the evening, ensuring the patients were treated on scene, extinguishing the flames and clearing the scene.

The exact cause of the incident is not clear and will be subject to police investigations.
