Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

On Saturday night, 1 May 2021, three people died after being involved in a horrific collision on the R34 near Utrecht.

The incident occurred at approximately 9.30 pm seeing emergency personnel from KwaZulu-Natal Private Ambulance and EMRS responding to reports. Upon arrival, three vehicles were found to be involved, whereby one vehicle had left the road and had caught fire.

Assessing the scene, paramedics discovered six people had sustained injuries. However, two patients had sadly succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived.

Furthermore, four of the patients sustained critical injuries, with one person entrapped and three people propelled from a vehicle. Using the Jaws of Life, paramedics and specialised rescue medics worked for almost an hour to free the trapped victim and stabilise all the patients on the scene before transporting them to hospital.

Regretfully, one of the critical patients succumbed to their injuries while in hospital. SAPS are investigating the cause of the collision.
