Family, school learners and The Gauteng Department of Education are mourning the loss of a school learner, who tragically died on Wednesday, 31 March 2021.
The incident involves a 17-year-old boy from the Dominican School for the Deaf in Hammanskraal. According to reports, the teenager took his own life after he was allegedly involved in an argument with his girlfriend.
Apparently, he had left his fellow learners at the school’s dining hall and went to the junior hostel; sadly, this would be the last time anyone would see him. His body was found shortly after leaving by his schoolmates; the young man had hung himself.
Gauteng MEC for the Department of Education Panyaza Lesufi explained that after learners found the boy, they immediately untied him and called for assistance; paramedics arrived at the school within 10 minutes. Still, they declared the child dead on the scene.
Lesufi adds the department’s counsellors were sent to the school, rendering the necessary support and debriefing to all those affected.
Following the youngster’s tragic demise, he stated, “It is very unfortunate that a learner decided to take his own life. This is a very sensitive issue to which we firstly wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family of the learner. We also wish to convey our sympathy to the school population for this loss.”
