
Eskom KwaZulu-Natal is implementing load reduction during peak hours today, July 21.
This follows a statement issued by the power utility, explaining that it will implement load reduction to prevent network overloading. According to Eskom, the network overloading stems from illegal connections, vandalised electricity infrastructure and bypassed meters.
“Overloading of networks leads to damage to the electricity infrastructure, through explosions in overloaded transformers and mini-substations,” Eskom explains.
Furthermore, Eskom says it also poses danger to people and property in the affected areas. The power utility also claims it is battling to keep up with the increased equipment failure. A venture which is costing millions to repair,
Load reduction began this morning from 7am until 9am. It will continue again from this afternoon, starting from 5pm until 7pm.
Will the Newcastle area be affected by load reduction?
According to Eskom’s statement, while Newcastle did not have any load reduction this morning, Madadeni will be affected this afternoon. Madadeni residents can expect load reduction from 5pm until 7pm.
Eskom encourages people to treat all installations as live. Furthermore, illegal activities involving Eskom property can be reported to the Eskom Crime Lune number on 0800 11 27 22.
