For the past month, the nationwide lockdown has seen South Africans adjusting to a new lifestyle. As certain restrictions will be eased as of tomorrow, May 1, what can we expect?

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma addressed the nation on Wednesday evening, April 29 regarding the lockdown level 4 restrictions.

Pertaining to exercise, fitness enthusiasts were eager to find out if they would be able break free of the confines of their homes and take up exercise regimes again.

Minister Dlamini-Zuma explains, “You can cycle, you can run, you can walk, but it will have to be within your neighbourhood. Within about 5km radius of your neighbourhood and home.”

However, exercise this will only be allowed between the times of 6am and 9am.

Minister Dlamini-Zuma also encourages people to take the regulations seriously. Especially focusing on the curfew which will be implemented from 8pm and 5am.

The Minister also emphasised that people should not be evicted from their residences during this time. However, she urges people not to take advantage of this and attempt to occupy a building, houses or land illegally and think they will not be evicted.

In terms of public transport, she says there will be taxis, e-hailing and private cars, rail and buses will be available; but they will operate under strict regulations.

Furthermore, restaurants will not be allowed for sit-downs. But Minister Dlamini-Zuma says they will be open for takeaways for deliveries.

Alcohol will still not be available for the duration of level 4. Furthermore, cigarettes, tobacco and related products will no longer be available for the duration of level 4. This decision, Minister Dlamini-Zuma says, is linked to health reasons.

Those caught not adhering to the regulations, will face legal consequences.

The following permissions and restrictions will be implemented:
