At just 12 years old, Carlos Giamello is no ordinary youngster, with his focus set on sporting greatness.

In September 2019, Carlos participated in the South African Wrestling Championships, where he was selected to participate in a tour to Estonia, a country in Northern Europe.

“I was meant to go from March 25 to April 6. While I found it a bit stressful, I am proud that I was chosen to go.”

The tour in Estonia would have seen him participate in tournaments and training camps, with a further training camp to have been held in Russia.

“I have been wrestling for three years now and this is a big achievement for me,” he emphasises.

In order to have been selected, Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club had to send in an application, while Carlos had to meet certain criteria.

The criteria included participating and winning at a South African level, having secured a certain amount of gold medals and be known among the North Gauteng wrestling coaches. Such is his passion and zeal for wrestling, Carlos met each piece of criteria.

While looking forward to the trip, Carlos is now unable to go due to the spread of COVID-19 and the security measures put into place by the world governments.

However, despite not being able to attend the tour, Carlos is still immensely proud of himself for having been selected.

What does Carlos enjoy about wrestling?

“I enjoy everything about wrestling, from the training to the tournaments. Wrestling helps a person focus on their schoolwork and everything else,” he smiles.

Well done to Carlos for his remarkable achievement.

The pursuit of victory and greatness is more than ideal which Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club aims for. It is the end goal, as the wrestling club dominates wrestling mats around the country.

On March 7, nine wrestlers from the Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club participated in the Tuks Challenge held in Pretoria. Two of the wrestlers formed part of the LTDP division, which caters for age groups between five and eight.

The two younger competitors were each awarded a medal of participation, while six of the older participants brought back gold, silver and bronze medals home.

Well done to the Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club.
