Tragedy struck on Sunday night, February 9, when two vehicles were involved in a collision shortly after 9pm on the P483 between Newcastle and Madadeni.
According to Jan-Henk van Vuuren, WATCO Medical Emergency Services, when paramedics arrived on the scene, they found five people had already succumbed to their injuries and were declared deceased on the scene.
Newcastle Fire Department was called to the scene to assist with the extrications of the deceased. Two other people sustained moderate injuries and were taken to local hospitals for further care.
The cause of the collision is still unknown and will be investigated by the SAPS.
