Carolyn Haywood, the American author once said, “Children are not only innocent and curious but also optimistic and joyful and essentially happy. They are, in short, everything adults wish they could be.”
However, what does it really mean to be a child? To be carefree, enjoying the simple things in life, forming lasting friendships and dreaming of a brighter tomorrow? To find solace and words of encouragement in the arms of their parents? Or is it never to worry about where their next meal is coming from?
In an ideal world, this is exactly what a child should experience daily. The sad reality is, there are children who will not find the same form of joy in childhood that others take for granted.
The I-Matter Foundation hosted an event on Thursday, December 13, dedicated to those children who lead lives that are a far cry from the average child’s life.

“We are here to celebrate young heroes who don’t always have anyone to look after them. Some of the children here today, don’t have parents and come from child-head families. There are also children who have been physically abused, sexually abused or come from poverty,” says founder and CEO of I-Matter Foundation, Nomasonto Sokhela.

Reaching out to these children, Nomasonto says the I-Matter Foundation felt it was important to allow these children to experience the true meaning of childhood.
“We have a jumping castle for them to enjoy. Some of these children have never been on one before. Today is all about giving them the opportunity to be a child.”
Adding to the day, Nomasonto says businesses and private people contributed to the day’s proceedings. This involved getting gifts for the children, toiletries and a meal.
Yet, while the children were spoiled on the day, Nomasonto reminds people to not to a blind eye on the hardships some children face. “If you can afford a nice doll for your daughter, try to remember the child who has nothing.”

She also encourages Newcastillians to report crimes against children. By being a voice for a child, you can save a life.
With the children enjoying the event, the I-Matter Foundation team has truly displayed the true meaning of Christmas. Reaching out to someone in need.
Well done to the team and their sponsors for giving back to the community.
