From October 19 to October 21, Taryn put her physical and mental capabilities to the test. Proving her dominance at an international level.
On day one, she did a three-kilometre sprint through an intense obstacle course against other contenders. Her speed and endurance being challenged through the course.
On the second day, Taryn participated in the 15km race, facing 100 obstacles and putting her body to the ultimate test.
The third day was a team event, where teams consisting of three athletes took to the course. They raced in a relay format, on a course specifically designed in four separate legs. Each leg targeting a key discipline of OCR: speed, strength, technique, and teamwork.
“It was an eventful trip. I had an injury on day one and while I did not perform as well as I intended, due to the injury, I completed all the races. It was a wonderful experience.” Said Taryn.
At the OCR World Championships, Taryn says she learned valuable lessons which are sure to benefit her sporting career. “I learned the mind is the most powerful tool to get you through challenges. It is also important to be supportive of your team and other teams.”
Prior to the event, Taryn explains she underwent hours of training and preparation. “The training for events such as this is intense.”
This is where her coach stepped in, guiding her through her running, strength, obstacle and endurance training. She also had to be prepped for the weather conditions, as the championships took place during England’s autumn season.
Due to the cold and wet weather conditions, Taryn found herself enduring cold showers and ice blocks to take on the daunting weather.
With the event under her belt, Taryn is looking forward to next year’s championships. “I am hoping to obtain a spot in the top 20 next year,” she concludes.
Well done to Taryn Strydom for representing Newcastle at an international event. You are a true athletic warrior.
