Can motorists expect another hike in the fuel prices next week?

As September brings promises of warm weather and blossoming plants, the spring season also brings dark tidings.

It seems motorists can expect an increase in the price of fuel this September. Will we be paying record high petrol prices of over R16 per litre?

The latest data released by the Central Energy Fund, shows that 93 petrol is expected to increase by 15 cents. The price of 95 petrol is apparently expected to increase by a staggering 18 cents. Both 0.05 and 0.005% sulphur diesel are expected to increase by 17 cents per litre.

The weakening Rand value against the US Dollar is a contributing factor towards the ever-increasing petrol prices. Yet, the oil price has remained relatively stable which has saved South Africans from an even higher fuel increase.

The Department of Energy is expected to announce the exact figures for the fuel prices later this week. However, the prices are set to be implemented on September 5.

With the imminent threat of petrol increase, motorists will now have to look at tightening their budgets. With South Africans already facing strain with the high petrol prices, it is becoming imperative to find cost effective ways to save fuel.

Three ways you can save fuel this September:

  • Turn off your car’s aircon. As scary as this sounds with the looming heat, aircons require more power from a vehicle’s engine. Which in turn requires more petrol.
  • Avoid constant idling. Unnecessary idling uses more petrol than you would imagine. During periods where extended idling is expected, it is best to rather switch your vehicle off. This will cut out both fuel consumption and fuel emissions.
  • Form a lift club. While driving in your own vehicle offers freedom, forming a lift club does minimise the costs of fuel.
