This event has compelled the Newcastle Municipality to reinforce the critical nature of safety regulations at local swimming facilities.
In addressing the incident, the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit confirmed awareness of the drowning at the Newcastle Swimming Pool on Saturday, 1 February 2025.
“The individual was identified as an adult male, and it is understood that he entered one of the two swimming pools”, stated the Communications unit, further noting that the pool “was clearly barricaded and marked as ‘unauthorised’. His unresponsive body was discovered in the pool by a municipal official who immediately notified the authorities.”
The matter was reported to the Newcastle South African Police Service (SAPS), and an investigation is currently underway.
In response to this sorrowful incident, the Communications Unit extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. They also issued a strong advisory for residents to avoid any areas marked as off-limits, highlighting the inherent dangers of ignoring such warnings. I live in the area of the ferrum pool. Often times when driving past over weekends the big gate on Drakensberg road side is wide open with no one there to check who is entering. Anyone can wonder in there without knowledge of the lifeguards or other personal. I just think this is a bad reflection on the pool management.
They must stop drink and braai on the pavements and then gp swimming they go swim while they were drinking this must realy come to a end
