Winter is settling firmly over KwaZulu-Natal, bringing a weekend of changing weather condition for Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid.
While parts of Northern KwaZulu-Natal can still expect mild to warm daytime temperatures, the evenings will tell a different story, with colder overnight conditions continuing to define the region’s winter pattern.
According to forecasts from AccuWeather, the weekend will bring a mix of pleasant sunshine, cooler spells, cloud cover and, in Vryheid’s case, the possibility of rain on Saturday.

Here is what residents can expect across the three towns:
Friday, 12 June 2026
Newcastle: A pleasant day is expected, with temperatures reaching 24°C. However, the evening will turn notably colder, with temperatures dropping to around 5°C.
Ladysmith: Conditions are expected to remain warmer during the day, with temperatures climbing to 27°C. By night, temperatures are forecast to fall to 7°C.
Vryheid: Moderate conditions are anticipated, with daytime temperatures reaching 24°C. The evening will bring a chill, with temperatures dropping to 7°C.
Saturday, 13 June 2026
Newcastle: Cooler conditions are expected, with daytime temperatures reaching 18°C. Overnight, temperatures are forecast to drop to 6°C.
Ladysmith: An overcast and cool day is expected, with temperatures also reaching 18°C. Night-time conditions will remain cool, easing to 7°C.
Vryheid: A cloudy and cool day is forecast, with temperatures reaching 15°C. Rain is also expected during the day. By evening, temperatures are set to settle at 9°C.
Sunday, 14 June 2026
Newcastle: Milder conditions are expected to return, with temperatures climbing to 24°C. Despite the warmer day, the night will remain cold, with temperatures dropping to 6°C.
Ladysmith: A warmer day is forecast, with temperatures reaching 25°C. By evening, temperatures are expected to ease to 9°C.
Vryheid: Mild conditions are anticipated, with temperatures reaching 22°C during the day. Overnight, temperatures will drop to 6°C.
Overall, the weekend forecast reflects a familiar mid-winter rhythm for Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Daytime conditions may remain manageable in several areas, but the sharp drop after sunset will continue to remind residents that winter is now well established.
Residents are encouraged to keep jackets close, prepare for colder evenings, and monitor updates from trusted weather services, particularly where cloud cover and rainfall may affect local conditions.
For Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid, the message is simple: the days may offer some warmth, but the nights will remain firmly in winter’s grip.
