Specific Citro-Soda Batches Recalled Nationwide by SAHPRA

Citro-Soda recall

South Africans are being urged to exercise caution following the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) recall of specific batches of Citro-Soda Regular products. The decision stems from a potential contamination risk identified at the Adcock Ingram Clayville manufacturing facility in Johannesburg.

At a media briefing held on 24 March 2026, the regulator confirmed that the recall, implemented on 17 March 2026, followed an inspection at the Johannesburg facility where a possible risk of foreign material contamination was detected.

Although no widespread harm has been reported, the step represents a precautionary measure intended to protect consumers.

SAHPRA has stated that the recall is confined to specific batches of the following Citro-Soda Regular products:

  • Citro-Soda Regular 60 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 120 g
  • Citro-Soda Regular 4 g x 30 sachets

In line with its broader regulatory mandate, SAHPRA emphasised that the recall is an integral part of its ongoing surveillance and risk-based oversight of health products on the market.

At the same time, the authority has reassured the public that the matter is being handled in close coordination with the manufacturer, with all relevant compliance measures under active scrutiny.

The recall has prompted an immediate response across the supply chain.

Retail pharmacies, wholesalers and distribution centres have been directed to stop selling the affected batches at once and to return all stock to suppliers without delay.

Consumers who have already purchased any of the implicated products are advised to return them promptly to the nearest health facility, pharmacy or retail outlet.

Additionally, SAHPRA has further called on members of the public who may have used the products to remain vigilant, with the regulatory authority urging anyone experiencing adverse effects to seek medical attention without delay; and report the incident directly to the authority, so that monitoring and any necessary follow-up can continue effectively.

“The safety and well-being of the public remain our highest priority. SAHPRA will continue to act decisively and transparently to ensure that all health products on the market meet the required standards, of quality, safety and efficacy,” said the Chief Executive Officer of SAHPRA, Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela.

Looking ahead, SAHPRA has indicated that its oversight will extend well beyond the recall itself.

The authority stated that it will continue to monitor the withdrawal and destruction of all affected batches, while maintaining regulatory pressure on the Clayville facility until the prescribed corrective and preventive actions have been fully implemented and verified.

Consumers and healthcare professionals are reminded that cooperation with the recall process remains essential to ensuring the incident is brought to a swift and complete close.
