Severe thunderstorms, bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, frequent lightning and hail, are set to affect several regions of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
This follows the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a warning, urging residents and motorists across the province to exercise caution throughout the day, as these conditions are expected to deliver widespread disruption.

The SAWS forecast, which indicates that isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will sweep across KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday 18 March 2026.
Nevertheless, the weather service warned that some of these storms are likely to intensify into severe thunderstorms, particularly in the western and southern parts of the province. As a result, the more intense cells carry the potential to cause significant localised disruption in affected towns and surrounding areas.
To give residents a clearer picture of what to expect, SAWS has outlined the likely impacts of these severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal.
These range from localised damage to infrastructure and informal settlements to flooding of low-lying roads, small bridges and vulnerable crossings. In addition, the service has warned that wet and slippery surfaces, combined with reduced visibility, could lead to minor motor vehicle accidents, while drivers are especially cautioned about hazardous conditions on unpaved roads and gravel surfaces during periods of heavy rain.
These impacts are most likely to occur in the following towns and areas, forecast to experience the highest risk from the severe thunderstorms on Wednesday, 18 March 2026:
- Ladysmith
- Newcastle
- Dannhauser
- Underberg
- Indaka
- Dundee
- Utrecht
- Estcourt
- Mooi River
- Msunduzi
- Bergville
- Giants Castle
With the adverse weather set to persist for much of the day, SAWS has advised motorists in the listed areas to remain vigilant.
Where possible, they should avoid crossing bridges or using roads in low-lying zones that are prone to flash flooding. Furthermore, the service has noted an elevated risk of sinkholes appearing on already saturated ground, which could compound travel hazards even further.
Moving beyond the travel warnings, SAWS has strongly recommended that members of the public refrain from outdoor activities during the passage of thunderstorms.
Similarly, pet owners, livestock farmers and vehicle owners are encouraged to secure animals and property in advance, as strong winds may generate dangerous flying debris capable of causing harm or material damage.
In light of the forecast weather conditions, residents across KwaZulu-Natal are therefore encouraged to monitor official SAWS updates, as well as reliable and trusted media and news outlets.

As KwaZulu-Natal faces a day of unsettled weather, the focus now shifts to preparedness and careful judgement.
